German painter, mainly active in Memmingen, near Ulm, where he was a leading figure in the period of transition from late Gothic to Renaissance. Most of his paintings are on religious subjects, but in his later years he turned more to portraiture, notably in the service of the emperor Maximilian I (see Habsburg). In 1515 he was summoned to Vienna by the emperor and there painted the Family of Maximilian I (KH Mus., Vienna), one of the earliest group portraits in German art.
