Kunsthistorie 1940-1970

Art History 1940-1970

The end of World War II marked at the same time a change of power in the art world. Now New York had displaced Paris as the capital of art.

The period from 1945-1970 is one of the most dynamic and exciting periods in the art history and reminds in many ways of the years 1905-1914. Several movements arise simultaneously, and the many different schools and artists are nearly stumbling over each other.

Several European artists like Marcel Duchamp, Hans Hofmann, Josef Albers, Max Ernst, Arshile Gorky, Roberto Matta, André Masson and Yves Tanguy went to the USA, and they had a great influence on the young American artists dominating on the international art scene in the following decades after the war.

The Abstract Expressionism is together with the Pop Art, the Minimalism and the Conceptualism the most important movements.

The leading artists are Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Joseph Kosuth, Yves Klein, Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik.
